SRRT BOOTH
VOLUNTEER SHIFTS &
STUDENT / RECENT GRAD DRIVEN
LIBRARY EDUCATION DISCUSSIONS
AT ALA ANNUAL 2006

We are looking for volunteers to help set up and staff the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) booth (#3450) at the ALA Annual conference in New Orleans, June 2006. It would be great to have 2 people for each 1-hour shift (or longer if you have the time). Duties are to be a welcoming presence to exhibit hall visitors and to keep literature tables stocked and neat. On Friday, volunteers are needed to help set-up and decorate the booth. SRRT is sharing this booth with the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), so we'll have lots of space.

In addition, Radical Reference is looking for current LIS students and recent grads (less than 5 years) to lead open discussions on the state of library education: problems and solutions. You do not need to be a member of Rad Ref or SRRT to lead one of these discussions.

Please contact Jenna Freedman (jfreedman @  barnard dot edu) if you can:

E-mail Elaine Harger (eharger @ agoron dot net):

Guidelines for discussion facilitators
:

  • Introduce the topic(s)
  • Keep the discussion going when it lags
  • Keep it on track if necessary
  • Call on people in the order that they indicated their desire to speak but favoring those who haven't yet spoken and perhaps those from a group that is underrepresented in the discussion. (Note that if the discussion can flow smoothly and fairly without your having to orchestrate it, then you don't have to.)
  • Keep track of time and warn people when it's running out (If you don't have to leave in a hurry, though, feel free to keep it going as long as you want.)
  • Take notes if you can and get them to Jenna or post them on the LEF wiki yourself
  • Prep: Up to you! You may wish to rely solely on participant input. You may wish to do a whole bunch of research, prepare a bibliography, or deliver a stand-up routine on the topic.
