Approaches to American Culture, 1607-1865

PROJECTS:
- Project #1: Due
March 5 -- Colonial America -- Publish a digital presentation which includes a textual
analysis of one of the original documents/texts assigned for this portion of the
course [25%] (student projects)
- Project #2: Due
April 12 -- Publish a digital presentation or
submit a traditional essay in which you critically compare a secondary account of
this period (1607-1865) in one of the pre-1967 "classics" in American Studies
with a secondary account written more recently and in keeping with the "new"
American Studies [20%] (student
projects)
- Project #3: Due April
30 -- Antebellum America -- Publish a digital presentation which includes an
iconographic analysis of an original image relevant to American culture between the
Revolution and the Civil War [25%]
ASSIGNMENTS:
- In addition to the projects described above, you will be required to complete smaller
assignments related to the course readings. Some of these assignments will require
small additions to your website, while others will require more traditional writing.
These assignments will be announced along with reading assignments. A few of
the assignments are listed below; note that this is only a partial list. [20%]
- Due January 27 -- Post a message introducing yourself to
the class to the course bulletin board.
- Due February 3 -- Have your web page up and running.
It should include a link to the couse website, as well as a link to a website on
the Internet, along with whatever else you choose to place there.
- Due March 29 -- Field trip assignment
- Due April 19 -- Taking
Stock: An assessment of the uses of techology for American Studies.
PARTICIPATION:
Finally, regular class attendance and informed participation in class
and in course bulletin board discussions are required. [10%]
