1624 First Dutch settlement of Manhattan {New Amsterdam]
1626 Peter Minuit to Manhattan -- Settlement of 30 houses
1640s Dutch spread throughout southern region around New Amsterdam
1646 Peter Stuyvesant begins 20-year regime
1664 English displace Dutch rule; New Amsterdam becomes New York
1673 Dutch temporarily resize new York; give it over in 1674
1674 Uninterrupted English governance until 1784 with evaculation of NYC
1775 NYC as site of Continental Congress
