Math Skills Diagnostic
: results and implications

The diagnostic you took during lab the first week of classes was designed to assess your background in the basic algebraic skills that are essential to success in chemistry.  The results do not contribute in any way to your grade. We hope they will provide you and us with an early warning of who may need some extra help with problem solving this term.

There were 20 questions (correction: I erroneously said 25 in an earlier posting).  Students this year scored between 6 and 20.  The class mean was 15.5.  If you scored 15 or above, you are well-prepared mathematically for chemistry, with possibly some areas in need of review.  If you scored from 12 to 14, you may have to work harder to improve your skills, but you can probably do so on your own, including coming frequently to office hours.

If you scored 11 or less, we strongly encourage you to take action now. Mrs. Olympia Jebejian, one of the Lab Directors, (office: 813C Alt) has considerable experience helping struggling students.  She is willing to organize and teach a special weekly math and chemistry skills help session.  Please speak to her AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to talk about this.  If you scored 12 or 13, and you think this class might help you, you may also speak to Mrs. Jebebian.

Scores are below, listed with Barnard ID.  The first table is ordered by score, the second by ID.  If you registered for the course late, we do not yet have an ID for you. Please send an e-mail to Prof. Chapman ASAP with your ID, and you may come to get your score.  If you didn't take the test, you will have to assess your background on your own.
